Hyper Light Breaker Review

Hyper Light Breaking My Spirit

Upon loading into your first Hyper Light Breaker solo game you are met with a large vibrant map with lots to explore, collect, and fight! However, the game slowly divulges into random enemies running at you from all directions every couple of seconds, and getting hit by 3 attacks leading you to lose more than half of your health. To make matters worse when you load into the boss fights there’s this game stutter that if you are lucky will only make you eat 1 attack from the boss, if you aren’t lucky however there goes another life lost. I was all in for a Roguelike, Open world, Extraction game, however who is this game tuned for, and why is it doubling down on punishing the player constantly? Don’t get me wrong the combat is fun, and the addons, gear, and zipping around on your hoverboard is great…. But there are major flaws in the base game mechanics that lead this game to being unfortunately frustrating after a couple hours of playing. Let Hyper Light Breaker cook until full release. At this moment I cannot recommend this game at full price in its current state.

Considerations:

  • ✅ Large vibrant world map

  • ✅ Engaging combat and movement mechanics

  • ❌ Awful damage and enemy tuning

  • ❌ Game stutter makes combat with bosses impossible

Final Verdict:

Hyper Light Breaker gets 5 procedurally generated worlds out of 10
